Get Started With Lessons

Teaching Rooted In The Fundamentals

I want to help you become a well-rounded, confident organist, so we will cover all of the musical basics starting in your first lesson. You will learn how to read notes (if you don’t have prior music experience), and we’ll progress to scales, arpeggios, sight reading, and more. We will also cover rudimentary music theory concepts as early as possible, and you’ll be able to discern intervals, chords, and keys before long. Don’t worry, there won’t be tests or boring studying involved - we will include that information naturally while working on music and tunes that you can enjoy.

We will also familiarize you with all of the parts of the organ console: the keys, pedals, stops, and more. Of course, I always encourage my organ students to ask questions.

For Pianists Adding New Skills

It’s not uncommon for a pianist to diversify his skillset by learning to play the organ. This is a great way to increase professional viability, or simply be able to play more music with with different ensembles in interesting environments. We will build on your existing keyboard knowledge, and you’ll be able to read an organ score fluently in no time at all. As you improve, we will cover the crescendo pedal, mutation stops, and other techniques, and we can choose repertoire based on your specific interests.

Aspiring Church or Synagogue Musicians

To play the organ confidently for a congregation or choir, you will need to learn the fundamentals, be able to sight read well, and even improvise, transpose, and modulate from one key to the next. Expert church organists often have to bridge gaps between moments in the service, improvise introductions for hymns, or come up with a postlude at a moment’s notice - I have been doing this for decades, and I’m happy to show you the ropes!

Study With an Experienced Organ Teacher and Composer

I have been a professional musician and educator for several decades, and I’ve served as organist and director of music at numerous churches and synagogues. I would be happy to help you learn any facet of practical organ playing, because I’ve almost certainly been in the same situation as you at one point or another in my career. You are welcome to contact me about something as specific (like transposing or improvising), or we can simply start helping your learn the organ from scratch.

I have also published and performed a number of musical works and hymn settings, and I can help you understand music theory so you can create your own hymn arrangements or original compositions as well.

Learn Jazz or Classical Organ Playing

My beginner organ lessons are based on classical pedagogy, and I believe that learning the fundamentals will allow you to pursue any genre you want to on either a pipe organ or Hammond organ.

That said, I am more than happy to help you learn how to play jazz organ. Jazz pianists find it relatively easy to transfer their abilities to the organ, and people who already know how to play the organ (at even a rudimentary level) can grasp the basics of jazz technique and improvisation.
