Hi, I’m John Cavicchio.
As a professional keyboardist, organist, director of music, composer, and educator, I enjoy working with music students of all ages and skill levels. I believe music can enrich anyone’s life, and whether you aspire to be a professional musician or a skilled amateur, I’d be happy to work with you.
Currently, I teach at Red Bank Catholic High School, direct music at First Presbyterian Church in Freehold, and direct the choir at Temple Shaari Emeth Synagogue. I have over 50 years of experience performing, teaching, and composing music.

Why Take Music Lessons in Freehold, NJ With John?
Decades of Teaching Experience
Playing music is one thing, but teaching is a different discipline altogether. I’ve taught young children, teens, and adults in private lesson settings, and I have also led countless clinics with choirs, hand bell ensembles, and other musical outlets. No two students are the same; I always work with students to identify their goals, deficiencies or advantages, and I use that information to build a unique learning path for them.
Lessons With an Active Musician
Taking lessons with a practicing musician has significant advantages. I can help you learn how to prepare for auditions and recitals, and we can discuss the differences between playing solo material and accompanying others. Furthermore, as an active performer, I have to maintain my own grasp of technique, practice habits, and pedagogy.
A Musician Who is Also a Composer
I’ve arranged a written numerous pieces of music for both choral and instrumental settings, and I have found that this grasp of music theory and form helps me teach the art of musical interpretation to my students effectively. Additionally, if you would like to study music theory, composition, or arranging, I would be happy to help you.
The Instruments I Teach
Piano
I enjoy working with aspiring pianists of all ages in central New Jersey. I can start your children on the instrument, or I can help young professionals or older adults continue their education. I also realize that beginning the piano as an adult is a significant undertaking, and I can help you get up to speed on the instrument as quickly as possible.
Organ
I have been a church and event organist for many years, and I enjoy helping other people discover and learn the instrument. Whether you are a pianist trying to deepen your portfolio, or an experienced musician who would like to pursue a career in church music, please get in touch.
About My Teaching Style
I don’t run a conservatory, so I won’t impose a certain repertoire list or set of expectations on you. I want you to enjoy music and live a fuller life because of it. If you want to prepare for college auditions, we can take a more rigorous approach to meet those demands, and if you want to learn a set of hymns or pop songs, we can accomplish that as well. Just let me know what you are looking for.
That said, I do cover the fundamentals with my students. You will learn notes, rhythm, good technique, and more, and you’ll have a solid foundation at the keyboard.
